Dr. Sheppard grew up as a pipe-moving farm boy in Idaho. He got a degree in Print Journalism at Utah State University where he was assigned to cover the state’s efforts to mandate health insurance for all state university students. In covering the story he realized that primary health care was more expensive if funded through health insurance. He determined to attend medical school with the purpose of opening a “cash-only” medical clinic. Following residency he opened the first Direct Primary Care clinic in Southwest Missouri, using the Atlas model of Direct Primary Care. He since has a full and profitable Direct Primary Care clinic. He has presented on successful business practices of Direct Primary Care Clinics for the AAFP and other organizations. He lives in rural Missouri with his wife, five children, and a multitude of ducks and chickens.
